Sitting on the floor while eating is an ancient culture of many Asian countries like India, Japan, China, etc. This very simple ancient practice of sitting on the floor while eating  is done with a unique asana (yoga posture of our body) which has many health benefits. 1. Its Yoga!

Indian practice of sitting on the floor while eating is done in a cross legged position – an Asana called Sukhasana which is bit similar to Padmasana. This posture allows the mind to calm down and applies the pressure to the lower spine which facilitates relaxation. Our breathing slows down, muscular tension releases and blood pressure also subsides. From the perspective of the Ayurveda, all these things combine to have very positive effect on the proper digestion of the food we eat.

2. Helps to improve digestion

Cross legged position facilitates the blood flow towards the abdomen region of our body which ease the digestive process. When we eat from a plate placed on the floor, we have to naturally bend forward slightly to put the food in our mouth and go back to our starting position to swallow. This constant back and forth movement causes the muscles of our abdomen to be activated and also leads to increased secretion of stomach acids, making it much easier for our body to digest the food thoroughly. Optimal digestion of food is the key to a healthy body.

3. Controls the excessive consumption and aids in weight-loss

If the stomach is stuffed excessively then there will be no movement of the food particles. The digestive juices will be secreted beyond the requisite content and it results in acidity. We should always keep some empty space in our stomach which aids in proper digestion of the food. Sitting down will help in reducing the stomach space by nearly half i.e your upper part of the stomach gets compressed naturally. Thus you will ideally eat only half of what you would have eaten if you had used a table-chair. You will know when your are full and which is very important for weight management.

When you squat or sit in this position the muscles in your lower back, pelvis, around your stomach and those of the upper and lower abdomen stretch – reducing pain and discomfort. This, in turn helps your digestive system relax and stay in a normal position. The regular stretching of these essential muscles also helps make you more flexible and healthy.

5. Aids in mindful eating

Eating food while concentrating on every aspect of the food, its smell, taste, texture and how much you are eating is very important to the whole experience of eating. Which is what sitting on the floor and eating gives you. Since your mind is calm and your body is ready to accept the nutrition by secreting the digestive juices / acid, it not only helps you focus on your food, but also helps you make better choices when you eat.

6. Improves the body posture

Sitting cross legged in itself is an Asana, meaning a posture. When we sit on the floor our posture is automatically corrected, making our back straight, lengthening our spine and pushes back our shoulders, beating all the common aches and pains that come with bad posture. Posture is very important when it comes to staying healthy. Good posture not only helps prevent injuries but it also reduces the chances of excessive strain on certain muscles and joints, which can lead to fatigue and quicker than normal wear and tear.

Cross legged position or Sukhasana is one pose that has health benefits for your entire body. Constant bending of the knees, ankles and hip joint helps keep them flexible and free of diseases. With flexibility comes better lubrication between the joints making it much easier to sit on the floor.  It helps keep your joints supple, flexible and less prone to injuries and degenerative diseases like arthritis and osteoporosis.

8. Makes heart stronger and improves circulation

When we sit on the floor, our heart gets the benefits of easy circulation of the blood, as the blood is easily pumped through the heart to all the organs needed for digestion. When we sit on the dining table and chair, the more blood flows to the legs as they are at a much lower level than the heart. Thus causing heart to work harder to maintain the blood flow. Therefore sitting on the floor leads to a healthy heart by reducing the excess pressure on it while eating.

 9. It’s humbling

Sitting on the floor can give you a brand new, humble and grateful perspective on others, the world and yourself. There is a reason monks meditate on the floor and not in chairs. It is simply easier to be grounded and connected with the spiritual side of life.

In some cultures eating while sitting on the floor is considered demeaning. I have no right and intension to judge the cultures, but I personally think sitting on the floor while eating, keeps you rooted to the earth.

Moreover you can always combine fashion and health together by having nice low furniture decorated as per your choice where you can dine with your friends and family and still look fashionable 🙂

Everything in the Universe has a vibration (frequencies), including our physical body. Every flower, plant, tree, water, mineral, rock, crystal, or gemstone has its own specific vibration. Sound and even color has its own vibration. We’re all made of vibrational energy and connected spiritually by the energy, whether we choose to believe it or not. We require the consumption of energy in the form of food, air and water for sustenance and good health.

Ancient wisdom

In many cultures there is an emphasis on intention and emotion in cooking. The ancient Greeks knew that if the food they were cooking was cooked with ‘agapi’ (unconditional love) and had good energy, their food would be delicious and would heal them at the same time. The Bhagavad Gita, a sacred Hindu scripture, teaches that the intention of the person cooking the food is actually transferred to the food.

Research

Masaru Emoto, a Japanese author and researcher, has done a research on the effects of different energies and thoughts on water. He discovered that human energy and consciousness affect water’s molecular structure. His experiments showed that positive thoughts, words, intentions, and prayers produce harmonious crystal formations in the water, and even cleanses polluted water. Negative thoughts, words, and feelings produce fragmented, disharmonious crystal formations. Following images of the water crystals clearly shows the effect of thought and emotions on the water.

Holy water

For generations in most of the cultures around the world, we have seen a concept of the Holy Water. Christians have holy water which is sanctified by a priest, and in Hindu culture the Prasad (food offered to the God and then consumed by the worshipers) and Tirtha (holy water) from the temple are some of the examples. All of them have vibrations of positive thoughts, prayers and blessing in them. The food from a holy place does not have any magical ingredients in it, but when we eat or drink food from any holy place, we feel happy and blessed. It is because this food has a special power of positivity in it.

Imagine if we all start to cook our food consciously and immerse our food with thoughts of love and pleasure, how will that affect the outcome? By counting our blessings, feeling grateful for the good food we are cooking, and cooking the food with great love for the people who will eat it, we can have holy water and Prasad in our home everyday. If we are happy and relaxed while cooking, the food will taste better and optimum nourishment will be transferred to the people eating it. Peace will prevail in the kingdom that is your kitchen.

The simplest meal can be the healthiest food in the world if prepared in a spirit of affection and goodwill. A happy, loving cook is seen to strengthen the nourishing and healing power of each meal. May be that is the reason why in India during the era of kings and dynasties, the head Chefs were called Maharaj (King) as an appreciation of their significance to the king himself. This tradition continues even today in India.

Love

Just think about this for a moment. All of us have a good memory of a childhood comfort food our mother used to make for us. No matter how many times you or someone else tries that recipe, the food will not taste the same as her’s. Why does the food made by our mother or grandmother tastes delicious and makes us so happy? Love is the special and secret ingredient they put into the food while they are cooking 🙂

– If you are cooking dinner and then start thinking about work, bills to pay or any other thing that is bothering you, just step back and pause for a moment. Remember ‘worrying does not take away tomorrow’s troubles, it takes away today’s peace.’ Focus on the task at hand, and find something calming and happy to think about as much as you can. Focus on the aroma, the texture, the colors of the food etc.

Turmeric has been used in Asian countries for thousands of years. As far as evidence goes, it is being used in India for at least 6000 years as medicine, beauty aid, cooking spice, a dye and a lot more. Turmeric can be used in many forms like raw, dried in the form of powder or paste form. It can be used internally as well as for external application. Here I am going to talk about one way of using turmeric internally, in the form of Turmeric Milk or the so called ‘Golden Milk’.

Cure of the respiratory system is one of the main traditional use of Turmeric. Milk with turmeric is considered the best remedy for cold and cough due to its antiviral and antibacterial properties. It gives instant relief to a sore throat, cough and cold. As an anti-oxidant it protects the lungs from pollution and toxins. It also helps the oxygen transfer from the lungs to the blood. Warm nature of the turmeric spice heats up the body and gives quick relief from lung congestion and sinuses.

The curcumin in turmeric has been shown to kill cancer cells (apoptosis) and prevent their spread to other areas (metastasis). It is found to be effective against cancers of the breast, prostate, skin, colon, and lung. Many cancerous growths go undetected and untreated in the initial stages, drinking turmeric milk regularly may help prevent malignant growths as well as stop their progress in the early stages.

7. Pain and inflammation

Inflammation is generally regarded as a source of many health challenges. Turmeric is an excellent anti-inflammatory spice, easing conditions such as bursitis, arthritis, back pain etc.

8. Turmeric as First Aid

Researches has shown turmeric as haemostatic. It is able to stop the bleeding of wound and it is a great healer of wounds due to being both anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial.

 

Turmeric Spice Benefits for Health and Beauty

How should you have it?

Turmeric milk is ideally prepared with full fat milk, because any kind of good fat or oil aids in the absorption of turmeric constituents. If needed, you can also sweeten the turmeric milk with your favorite sweetener. Traditionally honey is used in turmeric milk because along with sweetness honey has its own medicinal properties. Adding black pepper to turmeric or turmeric-spiced food enhances curcumin’s bioavailability by 1,000 times due to black pepper’s hot property called piperine.

Recipe using Turmeric Powder

  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • 1 cup whole milk/almond milk/coconut milk/ soy milk
  • 1 tsp honey or your favourite sweetner (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp ghee/coconut oil/almond oil (optional)
  • 2-3 black peppercorns crushed
  • Pinch of cardamom/ cinnamon powder for flavor (optional)

Heat milk over a low heat and stir in the turmeric powder, crushed black peppercorns, cardamom/ cinnamon powder. Bring to boil and allow to simmer for 2 to 3 minutes. Turn off the heat and pour the milk into the cup then add ghee/ coconut oil / almond oil. Add add 1 tsp of honey once the milk has cooled enough to touch. Drink the milk while its warm.

Recipe using fresh Turmeric Root

  • 1” piece of fresh turmeric
  • 1/2″ piece of ginger root (optional)
  • 1 cup milk/almond milk/coconut milk/ soy milk
  • ½ cup water
  • 2-3 black peppercorn crushed
  • 1 tsp honey or your favorite sweetener (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp ghee/coconut oil/almond oil (optional)
  • Pinch of cardamom/ cinnamon powder for flavor (optional)

Grate or crush the turmeric and ginger root, and add it to water. Heat and bring it to boil and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, (boiling water and turmeric root first will make sure that milk will not convert into curd. Same applies if you are using ginger root) then add milk, crushed black peppercorn cardamom/ cinnamon powder into it boil and simmer for 3 to 4 minutes.  Turn off the heat and pour the milk into a cup. Then add ghee / coconut oil / almond oil and add 1 tsp of honey once the milk has cooled enough to touch. Drink it while its warm.

Note:

  • If you are using honey in these recipes it is very important to know that honey should be added into the milk when it is removed from the stove. Heating honey at very high temperature changes its chemical composition and it becomes harmful for our body.
  • According to Ayurveda Ghee and Honey should not be taken in the exact same proportion, as it leads to poisonous effect on the body. Ghee and honey should always be taken in the ratio of 1:2 .
  • Ayurveda suggest that one should always drink milk in the evening (after sunset) or at the bed time because the enzymes required to digest the milk easily secretes in the human body during this part of the day.

How to make Ghee (Clarified butter)?

Traditional way to make it at home:

In India, traditional process of making ghee starts with the culturing of cow’s full fat milk (or cream from boiled milk) with yogurt. The mixture is allowed to rest for 4-5 hours until it is completely fermented. Then the mixture is churned to separate the butter and buttermilk in it (this process is mostly done in the early morning hours when the temperature is cooler in India, which makes it easy for the butter to separate from buttermilk). This separated butter is then melted over medium-low heat until its simmering. As the water in the butter slowly evaporates, the milk solids sink to the bottom of the pan. After all the water has evaporated (the butter will stop making a sputtering sound), it’s removed from the heat, and poured through a cheesecloth-lined strainer to remove the milk solids. This filtered/clarified butter is pure Ghee.

How much ghee to consume:

Remember, excess of anything is bad! According to Ayurveda one teaspoon of ghee early morning with warm water will do wonders to you digestive as well as overall health. Nutritionist suggests restricting the use of ghee to 2 teaspoons a day. To get the best results from eating ghee, you should also see to it that you are controlling the other fatty/fried food consumption. Ghee should be a part of your balanced diet.

The American Dietetic Association lists raisins among ‘The Perfect Snack’. Foods that provide energy and also help meet nutritional needs. Vajrasana: A Unique Yoga Pose (to be done after meals)

We all know that we should not do any exercise or Yoga immediately after having food. But there is one asana (yoga pose) which you can do after having food, and it will actually help your digestion! Vajrasana.

Vajrasana is a simple and very effective asana. It is the only asana which you can do after having your meal. This asana has a wide range of benefits from making your body internally strong to getting into the ultimate meditative state.

Meaning of Vajrasana:

Word Vajrasana is a combination of two words, Vajra and Asana. Vajra means thunderbolt or diamond. The word asana translates as ‘pose’. According to Hindu puranas / ancient scriptures, vajra was described as the weapon of Indra (the King of Gods) and it is considered as the strongest among all other weapons. Vajra had both, the indestructible nature of a diamond and the irresistible force of a thunderbolt.

Like vajra, the Vajrasana makes our body strong internally. Regular practice of this asana improves our immunity and we become less susceptible to various diseases.

Benefits of Vajrasana:

1. Improves Digestive Health:

Vajrasana alters the blood flow in the lower pelvic region. The blood flow to the legs is reduced and the blood flow to the digestive organs is increased. This increases the efficiency of the digestive system and helps those with weak digestion to digest a meal easily. Regular practice strengthens the digestive system and keeps acidity, indigestion, bloating, constipation at bay.

2. Better blood circulation:

Vajrasana helps better blood circulation in the body. It modifies the blood flow by reducing the blood flow in lower portion, especially in the legs and increasing blood flow to the upper parts of the body including digestive organs, heart, lungs and brain.

3. Makes lower body flexible:

It strengthens the sexual organs, tones lower body muscles (hips, thighs, calves), cures joint pains, urinary problems, etc.

4. Helps in weight loss:

Losing weight becomes possible with regular practice of Vajrasana. You will see reduction in your belly fat after a few weeks of regular practice of Vajrasana.

5. Helps meditation:

In Vajrasana the body becomes upright and straight with no effort. Slow and rhythmic breathing in this position can help you go into the meditative state very easily.

This is the only asana you can do immediately after meal, ideally you should do this asana everyday for 10 minutes after lunch or dinner. Doing so regularly will give you all the above benefits.

Initially, one may find it difficult to withstand the pose due to the intense stretch it gives to your legs and thighs but with time you may even go on till 20 minutes at a stretch.

Steps to do Vajrasana:

step 1: Come to sitting position

Step 2: Bend your left leg and bring the foot to the left buttock.

Do the same with your right leg, then balance on your toes as shown in the above picture.

This is called as Utkatasana.

Step 3: Shift the weight forward, straighten out the toes, and bring your knees to the ground.

Step 4: Keeping toes together, part just your heels apart and sit between your heels. Place the palms of your hands on the knees or near your pelvis region on one another as shown in the figure. Maintain the asana, breathing normally.

How to release (get out of) the Vajrasana:

To release the asana, remove the hands from the knees and return them to your sides. Go back to balancing on your toes (as in step 2 mentioned above). Straighten the left leg first then Straighten the right leg and lower the buttocks to the ground returning to sitting position (as in step 1 mentioned above).

“Remember: releasing the pose is as important as going into the pose.”

Precautions to be taken:

  • Beginners can take support of a pillow or rolled cloth below the ankle and knee if you find it hard to stretch. It takes the pressure off the feet and ankles.

  • Do not do Vajrasana if you have a knee problem; or if had a recent knee surgery, as it may put additional strain on the knee. Also, pregnant women should try this asana only with their knees apart in order to avoid stress on the abdomen.
  • Always practice new asana in presence of the instructor.

Not many of us know this, but drinking water after eating (immediately after having a meal) is in fact poisonous for our body! I am using the word poison here, because this habit of ours actually creates poisonous substances in our body.

Ayurveda has stated some rules/Sutras (Sanskrit word for rules) about when and how to drink water. When we start to look at these sutras from a scientific perspective, we realize how meaningful and effective these Sutras are. These sutras are also very easy to follow in our daily routine. By following this particular sutra about drinking water, you can avoid/control major diseases like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, other heart diseases etc.

Let’s understand Amashay / epigastrium:

There is a small part in our stomach called Epigastrium. In Sanskrit it is called as Jathar. Epigastrium is a small bag like organ present in our stomach. The food we eat first goes into it. Epigastrium stimulates the Jathar-agni / digestive fire to digest the food in it.

Lets understand Jathar-agni/digestive fire:

As soon as we take the first bite of our food (solid or liquid), our digestive fire starts to stimulate. This digestive fire (acid in stomach) helps us to digest our food. This digestive fire remains active till the digestion of the food is completed. This well digested food will convert into energy and will nourish our body.

What happens when we drink water immediately after our meal:

We all know that pouring water over fire puts out the fire. Similarly, when we drink water immediately after our meal, it puts out the digestive fire in our stomach (dilutes/weakens the digestive acid in our stomach). Some people even drink cold water after their meal which is very harmful. (Why? Read my other blog to know more about it: Is Drinking Refreshing Cold Water Making You Ill ? ) Also, people have a habit of drinking lots and lots of water after eating food.

We don’t realize it but all these daily habits of ours are creating poisonous substances in our body, which cause many diseases.

How exactly are the Poisons created inside our body?

As mentioned above, when we drink water immediately after meal, the digestive fire/acid will be weakened. Because of this, our stomach becomes stagnant pond of water with undigested food in it. So instead of digestion, fermentation of food starts in our stomach. Fermentation is nothing but the decomposition of food. This decomposition of food creates the following poisons in our body.

What are these Poisonous substances?

1. Uric acid:

First poison is the increase in Uric acid levels. Symptoms of increase in uric acid levels are:

Pain in knee, shoulder and waist joints.

Swelling and pain in the ankles, feet, wrists or elbows.

2. LDL (low-density lipoproteins) / Bad cholesterol:

Second poison is the increase in LDL cholesterol levels. We all know that when level of LDL cholesterol increases in our body it becomes difficult for the blood to flow through the veins of heart. This increases blood pressure. If this poison continues to increase everyday it blocks the heart veins. Ultimately it will cause heart attack.

3. VLDL (Very low density lipoproteins):

This type of cholesterol is more dangerous than the LDL type of cholesterol. If the level of this cholesterol increases, it is life threatening.

4. Increase in triglycerides levels:

High triglycerides levels increases the risk of heart diseases. Very high triglycerides may cause blocking of the blood supply to the heart or the brain.

So from above information, we can say that many of the heart and blood related problems could be caused by our daily habit of drinking water immediately after a meal. Next time if someone says that their cholesterol, triglycerides or uric acid levels have increased, know that their body is not digesting the food properly. “Digestion of food is more important than eating it”

How long should you wait to drink water after a meal?

  • You can take one or two sips of water immediately after having a meal just to rinse/clear your mouth and esophagus (tube that carries food, liquids and saliva from your mouth to the stomach)
  • According to Ayurveda, one should drink water after 1 hour 48 minutes of having a meal. This much time is required for the digestion of the food in our stomach. After this time duration the digestive fire naturally slows down. At this time our body requires water to circulate this digested food throughout the body. You can drink as much water as you want after this time.

(I know It is very difficult to wait 1 hour 48 minutes after a meal to drink water. So it might not be possible for everyone to wait that long. But still you should try to wait at least 45 minutes to 1 hour before you drink water. Once you are used to this habit, you can gradually increase the time.)

  • People with higher metabolism (if you do more physical activities or any kind of heavy exercises) can drink water after 1 hour of having their meal. As higher metabolism digests the food faster.

These simple lifestyle or habit changes can protect you from major life threatening diseases. The National Cholesterol Education Program advises that everyone have a lipid profile every five years starting at age 20. Take charge of your health and Remember this “prevention is always better than cure”.

Researchers at the CDRI (Central Drug Research Institute) Lab in Lucknow, India have done a case study on Clay Pot cooking. In one of their experiments, they cooked some Daal (Lentil curry) in a clay pot and at the same time also cooked some Daal in a pressure cooker. Then they compared the nutritional values of both the curries after they were cooked. In case of the Daal cooked in the pressure cooker, only 13% of the original micro nutrients present in the raw Daal were left. But in case of the Daal cooked in the clay pot, 100% of the micro nutrients which originally present in the raw Daal were still present in it after cooking! Essentially what was left in the pressure cooked Daal was almost worthless and unusable by the body.

2. Alkaline nature of clay:

The second thing that makes clay pots special is that the clay is alkaline in nature. Clay interacts with the acidity in the food and neutralizes the pH balance. It is very important for our body to always remain alkaline and maintain its pH balance, which protects us from various diseases like cancer. Cancer cells develop in an acidic environment. Alkaline environment restricts the growth of cancer cells.

How to balance our doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) with proper diet and lifestyle ?

If you have read that blog, you must have got some idea about which characteristics resemble with your own body. Now lets talk about how to balance our doshas with the help of proper diet and lifestyle.

While reading about the characteristics of each Dosha body type, you might have also noticed that your body might have mixed characteristics from any two Doshas, it is called as dual dosha body type. This is very common, but according to Ayurveda it is not that good. It is rare that someone has a single/pure Vata, Pitta, or Kapha body type. Pure dosha body type is considered better than dual dosha type. From the perspective of Ayurveda, the Tridosha body type is considered as the best type, which is influenced equally by Vata, Pitta and Kapha. It is the rarest doshic type.

This basic understanding of the 6 tastes and their effect on dosha will help you every time you make food choices.As I have already explained in my previous blog each dosha is a combination of two elements out of five basic elements (Space, Air, Fire, Water, Earth). So it lacks other three basic elements. If we want to balance it we need to eat food which consists of the remaining three basic elements.

For example –  If we eat more food with the space and air elements in it (food tasting Pungent, Bitter and Astringent), then it will aggravate or imbalance your Vata dosha. Vata dosha is a combination of space and air elements, so if we want to balance it we need to eat food which consists of the remaining three elements like earth, water and fire (food which are sweet, sour and salty).

When we eat food with the understanding of its nature and its effect on particular dosha we can easily balance it and maintain our Prakruti.

Our mothers or grand mothers always tell us to eat foods with every taste in our diet. Now you must have understood why is this so important. If we include foods with every taste in our regular diet with balanced proportions, our doshas will always remain balanced. Our mothers and grand mothers have this knowledge, which has been passed to them by their mothers and grand mothers. Our elders have always had this knowledge (knowingly or unknowingly), but these days we have started ignoring it as we moved on with our fast paced lives…

Vata dosha imbalance signs and remedy:

Signs of vata imbalance:

  • Constipation, gas, bloating, dry, hard stool.
  • Dehydration.
  • Craving warmth, dislike towards cold temperature and wind.
  • Frequent viral infection.
  • Weight loss.
  • Disturbed sleep.
  • Dry or chapped skin.
  • Difficulty tolerating loud noises.

Major causes of vata imbalance includes:

  • Eating vata-aggravating food.
  • Irregular schedule of daily activities like eating, sleeping etc.
  • Eating old, leftover, dry and cold food.
  • Not eating enough food.
  • Eating too rapidly.
  • Eating while anxious or depressed.
  • Drinking alcohol, coffee or black tea.
  • Suppression of bodily urges, such as sneezing, passing gas or elimination of waste material like stool and urine.
  • Staying up late.
  • Over-exertion.
  • Excessive worry, fear, or loneliness.

Tips for eating (to balance Vata)

  • Include sweet, salty, and sour tasting foods in your diet.
  • Avoid bitter, astringent and pungent tasting foods.
  • Eat warm, oily, or heavy foods.
  • Avoid cold foods.
  • Best oils to be used are almond, ghee and sesame.
  • Avoid ice cream and frozen yogurt.
  • Eat Boiled or steamed starchy vegetables.
  • Eat Ripe fruits.
  • Use mild spices like cumin, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, fennel, coriander, salt, cloves, mustard and black pepper.
  • Camomile, fennel, ginger, lemon tea is good.
  • Raw honey, jaggery (rawsugar), maple syrup, molasses are good as a sweetener.
  • Avoid using brown sugar and white sugar.

Pitta dosha imbalance signs and remedy:

Signs of pitta imbalance:

  • Appearance of red, inflamed rash or acne on skin.
  • Occurrence of acute inflammation or swelling in body or joints.
  • Acidity, gastric or peptic ulcers, heartburn.
  • Feeling nausea or discomfort upon missing meals.
  • Getting Diarrhea.
  • Uncomfortable feeling of heat in the body.
  • Feeling frustrated, angry, irritable.

Some major causes of pitta imbalance includes:

  • Eating Pitta-aggravating food
  • Eating while angry.
  • Smoking cigarettes.
  • Drinking coffee, black tea or alcohol.
  • Over-working.
  • Being overly aggressive and competitive.

Tips for eating (to balance Pitta):

  • Include sweet,bitter and astringent tastes in your diet.
  • Avoid pungent(hot), sour and salty food.
  • Eat boiled,steamed and raw vegetables
  • Reduce the intake of hot and spicy foods.
  • Eating sweet foods will reduce pitta.
  • Drink warm milk with small amount of cardamom and ginger in it.
  • Avoid buttermilk, salted cheeses, sour cream and yogurt.
  • Ghee and olive oil is best to use.
  • Use Mild, cooling spices like coriander, cardamom, cloves, turmeric, cumin, curry leaves, mint.
  • Avoid jaggery(raw sugar) and molasses if your pitta is aggravated use honey instead.

Kapha dosha imbalance signs and remedy:

Signs of kapha imbalance:

  • Body gains weight or becomes obese, which is a result of slow and sluggish digestion of food.
  • Occurrence of Water retention and swelling in the body.
  • Increased frequency of cold, congestion or cough.
  • Increased sugar level in the body which results in to the diabetes.
  • Increased cholesterol and triglycerides level in the body.
  • Feeling lethargic is very common sign of kapha because of heavy, slow and dull qualities of kapha.

Some major causes of kapha imbalance includes:

  • Eating kapha aggravating food.
  • Eating excessive  sweet, salty oily or fatty foods.
  • Eating heavy meals or Overeating.
  • Not doing any exercise or physical activity.
  • Having excessive sleep.

Tips for eating (to balance Kapha):

  • Include pungent, bitter, astringent taste into your diet.
  • Avoid sweet, sour and salty foods.
  • Eat more of boiled, steamed and raw vegetables.
  • Eating ripe foods will be good to balance kapha except banana. Minimize the intake of heavy foods, salt and dairy products.
  • Use raw honey instead of other sweeteners like sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup.
  • Use oils in small amounts only even the best oil if overused, will aggravate pitta.
  • Strong spices like pepper, paprika, garlic, basil, cloves, fennel, mustard, turmeric, cumin, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, coriander, black pepper will stimulate digestion, improve appetite, clears sinuses, stimulates blood circulation which is very helpful for balancing kapha.

The principles of Ayurveda and Ayurvedic medicine are solid and timeless. According to Ayurveda you can yourself cure/prevent 80% of the diseases in your body, that too in your home. Just by knowing your body’s basic tendencies and making wise decisions about what you eat and making some lifestyle changes you can stay healthy without ever going to a Doctor. Only for the remaining 20% of the diseases you will require assistance of a Doctor. These include major diseases like cancer, heart attack, surgeries and accidents. So be in harmony with your mind and body by following guidelines given by Ayurveda and always remain healthy.

Know your body type and personality – VATA, PITTA, KAPHA [PART2]

In the first part of this blog – VĀTA, PITTA AND KAPHA – THE 3 DOSHAS THAT DETERMINE YOUR PERSONALITY AND HEALTH [PART 1] , I wrote about what Doshas are (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), what basic elements are combined (Space, Air, Fire, Water, Earth)  to form each Dosha and how Doshas are spread out into our body. Please read that blog if you have not read it already. I am sure now you want to know what is your own Prakruti (body type). How are the Doshas influencing your personality and nature? You might also want to know what exactly are the different characteristics of these 3 Doshas? Lets talk about them now.

The Doshas are dynamic energies that constantly change in response to our bodily actions, thoughts, emotions, the food we eat, the seasons and any other changes that influence our mind and body. If the proportion of Dosha in your body is similar as you were born with, then you will be healthy and vibrant. If there is difference between these two states, it indicates the state of imbalance, which leads to various diseases in our body. In Ayurveda it is called as a Vikruti which is opposite of Prakruti.

There are three primary doshic states

Balanced- Influenced equally by Vata, Pitta, Kapha – is considered as the optimum state.

Increased- Particular Dosha is present in excess than its normal proportion.

Decreased- Particular Dosha is present in a less than normal proportion.

1. Characteristics of Vata Dosha (Wind Energy)

According to the ancient Ayurvedic scripture Ashtāngahridayasaṃhitā (अष्टाङ्गहृदयसंहिता), following are the characteristics of Vata dosha:

Vata dosha shlok - VĀTA, PITTA, KAPHA - Know your body type and personality

Vata is predominantly composed of space and air elements.

A person with Vata dosha has the following body characteristics:

  1. Thin body frame, does not gain weight easily.
  2. Skin is dry, rough, dark complexion, cracked
  3. Hair are dry and splitting
  4. Is usually quick in doing any activities
  5. Has variable and/or poor appetite.
  6. Physical working capacity less, resistance to disease usually poor.
  7. Prefers warm or hot food and climate.
  8. Sweats less,  and has variable thirst.
  9. Tendency of constipation.
  10. Has light sleep with many dreams.
  11. Prone to anxiety, depression and has unpredictable nature.

2. Characteristics of Pitta Dosha (Fire Energy)

According to the ancient Ayurvedic scripture Ashtāngahridayasaṃhitā (अष्टाङ्गहृदयसंहिता), following are the characteristics of Pitta dosha:

Pitta is predominantly composed of fire and water elements.

A person with Pitta dosha has the following body characteristics:

  1. Medium body frame.
  2. Skin is delicate, reddish complexion and warm to touch.
  3. Good or big appetite.
  4. Sensitive to warm temperature. Intolerance to hot food and climate.
  5. They prefer cold food and climate.
  6. Tendency of loose motions.
  7. Excessive sweating and often feel thirsty.
  8. Bright eyes, reddish sclera (the white outer layer of eyeball), yellow iris, sharp penetrating vision.
  9. Hair are soft, prone to premature graying and baldness.
  10. They are intelligent and have sharp memory.
  11. Hot tempered, brave, jealous, aggressive, commanding nature.

3.Characteristics of Kapha Dosha (Water Energy)

Kapha dosha shlok - VĀTA, PITTA, KAPHA - Know your body type and personality

Kapha is predominantly composed of water and earth elements.

A person with Kapha dosha has the following body characteristics:

  1. Large, board body frame, tendency to gain weight.
  2. Skin is thick, soft, smooth, firm, glossy, fair complexion.
  3. Has good stamina but is slow in physical activities.
  4. Deep and pleasant voice.
  5. Moderate appetite.
  6. Moderate sweating, low thirst.
  7. Deep and sound sleep.
  8. Large eyes, calm, stable with whitish sclera (the white outer layer of eyeball).
  9. Hair are thick, oily, wavy and dark-colored.
  10. Calm, cool, joyful, polite nature.

These are some of the characteristics of each dosha. By now you must have got an idea about the type of dosha your body belong to. But having said that, we all have complex personalities and body types. So its difficult to come to a conclusion about your correct Dosha based on a broad set of general characteristics. It will take a detailed evaluation by a professional Ayurvedic practitioner to know your exact body type. But never the less, these above guidelines will still give you a fair idea.

Vata, Pitta and Kapha are each essential to our physiology in some way or other, so no Dosha is better than or superior to any other dosha. Each one of them has a very specific set of functional roles to play in the body. When the doshas are out of balance, they can create various health problems in our body. Imbalance of doshas can be caused by stress, emotional trauma, as well as poor diet and lifestyle choices. All these disturbances cause an increase in one or more of the doshas, destroying the natural state of internal equilibrium of doshas represented by our body constitution.

Vata, Pitta and Kapha: The 3 Doshas that determine your personality and health [Part-1]

We all have different personalities and characteristics of our individual nature. But have you ever wondered what exactly makes each of our individual nature and personality unique and different from the other people? Why are some people hyperactive and fast, while others show calmness and stillness in their activities? Why do some people always feel naturally joyful, while others seem to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders? Why some people need more sleep than others? Why do some people feel hungry every couple of hours, while some don’t feel hungry so often? Ayurveda answers all of these questions with – Vāta, Pitta and Kapha – The 3 Doshas that determine your personality and health.

Ayurveda defines health as a state of physical, psychological, social and spiritual well-being. It is based on the theory of Panchamahabhoota the five basic elements – Space (also called Ether), Air, Fire, Water and Earth, and Tridoshas the three biological natures – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These are present in each and every cell of our body along with mind and spirit. All that exists in the universe, exists within us.

Our body contains these same five elements (Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth) in different amounts, and this is responsible for our Prakruti (body type). With the combination of these 5 elements, our body gets categorized into Vāta, Pitta or Kapha Prakruti and this is how we get our unique personality types.

What are the Three Doshas?

The Doshas are biological energies that are found throughout the human body and mind. They perform all the physical and mental processes inside the body and provide every human being a blueprint for his physical and mental health.

Poison is natural and inherent to some snakes. Similarly, the Prakruti is inherent to humans. Our body type is decided during conception, based on qualities of sperm and ovum.

How Tridoshas are spread in the body?

The Tridoshas are present all over the body. But each of their presence is especially dominant in particular parts of our bodies.

If you divide our body into three parts:

  1. The top part, from head to chest (sinuses, nostrils, throat, bronchi) is dominated by Kapha Dosha.
  2. The middle part, between chest and naval/belly button (liver, spleen, gall bladder, stomach, duodenum, pancreas) is dominated by Pitta Dosha,
  3. The lower part, below naval/belly button (small intestine, large intestine) is dominated by Vāta Dosha.

Depending on combination of the 5 elements in your body, the intensity of these Doshas vary. Which in turn makes up for your body type and personality.

What if your Aura gets polluted? Can you protect or vitalize your Aura? Can you cleanse your Aura?

My earlier post on ‘Aura – Energy field that affects your emotions, can help detect diseases‘, talked about what Aura is and how it affects us. Our Aura also protects us by screening harmful physical, emotional and psychic energies from our environment. It connects us to the nourishing energies in our environment and transfer these energies to the Chakras (energy centers of the body) and further processes these energies, often resulting into the balancing of nervous, hormonal, vascular and the other activities into the physical body. It sends signals or energies out into our environment that communicates information about us and attracts specific types of energies to us.

Sounds great right? But what if your Aura gets polluted? Can you protect or vitalize your Aura? Yes! You can cleanse your Aura! Easily

1. Mantra Chanting:

Mantra chanting is a powerful tool for energizing and strengthening of our Aura. A Mantra is an instrument of the mind – a powerful sound or vibration that you can use to enter a deep state of meditation. The sounds of Mantras stimulates the energies around and within us. It sets up purifying and refining effect on our Auric field. There are many Mantras available with a very high vibrations, like Mahamritunjay mantra and Gayatri mantra. They have a  powerful effect on our mind and body. Out of all the mantras OM or A-U-M is considered most powerful mantra of all.  You can chant a mantra for any number of times but traditionally mantra chanting repetition is done 108 times which is considered to be a special/sacred number. I will definitely write a blog about why 108 is considered as a special/sacred number.

  • Gayatri Mantra:

Sanskrit-ॐ भू: भुवः स्वः ।तत्स॑वि॒तुर्वरेण्यं॒भर्गो॑ दे॒वस्य॑ धीमहि ।धियो॒ यो नः॑ प्रचो॒दया॑त् ॥

om bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥtát savitúr váreṇ i yaṃbhárgo devásya dhīmahidhíyo yó naḥ prachodayāt

  • Mahamritunjay mantra:

Sanskrit-ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात्

tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanamurvārukamiva bandhanānmṛtyormukṣīya mā’mṛtāt

2. Meditation:

Along with mantra chanting, if you start meditation on a daily basis, you will see positive effects in all aspects of life. Recent studies have clearly shown the benefits of meditation to reduce stress, alleviate pain, relax muscle tension, improve mind-body coordination and achieve mental peace. Those who do not meditate regularly have Chakras (energy centers) that are not fully open, and as a result their Auras are much dimmer than those who meditate daily. You can do any type of meditation practice which resonates with you and which makes you feel peaceful.

3. Sunlight and Fresh Air

Sunlight is strengthening to the Auric field. Exposure to the sunlight stimulates the flow of your own energy. Some lower vibrations cannot exist with exposure to bright light. Take daily walk outside in the early morning sunlight or at the sunset time because during these time sunlight will be gentle. It will stimulate your Chakras and remove any negative low vibrations out of your Auric field. While fresh air will have cleansing effect as well as it will calm and refresh you.

4. Physical Exercise

Our body is like a machine. If it is not operating on a regular basis it will not be of any use. Physical activity is what keeps our body healthy and active. Daily exercises like Yoga, gym, running or a simple brisk walk is very beneficial for the healthy Aura which ultimately gives us a healthy body.

5. Connect with Nature:

Spending time outside amongst nature is incredibly healthy for our body, mind and soul. Nature nourishes our senses and grounds us. Going for trekking, hiking or just a walk in nature once in a week will be very beneficial.

 

6. Nourishing Food:

Eating foods with higher nutrient value like raw beans sprouts, fruits, vegetables, nuts and proper hydration with water will keep you feel light and vibrant internally. Also eating less food but more frequently has a more balanced effect upon the Aura.

These are some of the effective ways you can cleanse, protect and vitalize your Aura. It will keep your mind and body healthy and will keep diseases at bay.

What is Aura?

In scientific terms, Aura is an electromagnetic field that surrounds us. If we see any matter / object in the universe under a microscope we will find that on a micro level it is made up of atoms and molecules. This applies for our bodies too.

These atoms and molecules which are comprised of electrons and protons are in constant vibrational movement. This vibrational energy produces a magnetic field around the body. All our bodily functions such as respiration, digestion, nervous, circulatory etc. comprised of a series of electrochemical reactions. These magnetic and electrical energy fields interact to form what is now known as ‘The Bio-Energetic Field’, called Aura.

In the distant past, people admired things that they could not explain and called them ‘miracles’. Since ancient times we have sculptures, paintings and pictures of Gods / Spiritual Gurus across various countries, and one thing that is common in all of them is the Halo that surrounds their head which is known as the Aura energy field.  This Halo which the people at time considered as supernatural energies was nothing but Aura. It actually not only surrounds the head but also extends all around our body.

What does research say?

Many scientist have done research on Aura and have proved that Aura actually exists. One of the first serious attempts at scientifically studying the Aura was conducted by Dr. Walter Kilner at St. Thomos Hospital in London. In his book entitled  The human Atmosphere (1911), Dr. Kilner presents scientific evidence for the existence of the Aura. Recently the Indian mystic and scientist named Krishna Madappa has teamed up with some Russian physicists, and have developed a new science and technology called GDV (Gas Discharge Visualization) that can not only see the image of the whole human Aura, but can also map the real data and information inside of the human Aura. These scientists have also found that this technology can be used for early detection of cancer, heart disease and other medical conditions.

This Aura is often seen a mixture of fine colored frequencies where each color has its own individual nature and characteristics. The vibration of this Aura is very fine and subtle, so we need a special type of instruments to detect it. But some people with intuitive power and psychic potential can not only see the aura but can interpret the different colors and shapes in the aura which can reveal us a lot of unsaid information.

This electromagnetic field or Aura extends all around our body for about 4 to 5 feet and appears to be depleted in cases of an unhealthy person. The aura is directly connected to the health of the person. A person is said to be healthy when he has physical vitality, mental clarity, emotional well-being as well as highly positive spiritual energy. So a person who is healthy at all these levels has a bigger and brighter Aura, while in case of an unhealthy person the Aura will be smaller and darker.

Reasons behind an unhealthy Aura

Everyday most of us experience some degree of stress or tension in our lives, we also pick up ‘Energy Pollution’ from our interaction with the world and our reaction to it. Bad vibes, negative energies from people or places, shocks, traumas, our mood, all have their impact on our Aura. All these affects our ability to function at optimum level and can lead to ill-health.

Ever noticed that sometimes you get very good vibes from a person and some other person might give you bad vibes – even when you are meeting that person for the first time. When we are in close proximity with other people, layers of our Aura which extends around our body for about 4 to 5 feet interpenetrate one another and we exchange emotional energy with them. For example, when we are accompanied by our friends and loved ones it makes us feel very happy without our minds ever noticing it. While some people make us feel very uncomfortable by draining our emotional energy. It all happens without our mind noticing the cause. It is all because of your Auras.

Aura and disease detection

Most of us are unaware of it, but science is pointing out that disease in our body starts first in our Aura on a subtle level. Our negative or positive emotions play a major role in polluting or purifying our Aura respectively . Negative emotions lead to developing darker Aura and develops various diseases in our body. When we look at our Aura, if a particular point in the Aura – around a particular body part, appears darker in color it represents the polluted or unhealthy state of the Aura, and if it continues to become darker it causes disease in that particular part of the body in the near future. In this way it is possible to detect unhealthy Aura and protect our health in advance.

Now, you must be thinking how to lighten or purify the Aura? Today it is common for the people to drink cold water at home and also in restaurants.  We need to take charge of our health and listen to our body and provide it with its natural needs.

What does Cold Water do to harm your Body?

1. Your blood vessels shrink:

When you drink cold water it shrinks your blood vessels because it is the nature of the cold temperature to shrink everything. Because of that blood circulation in your body slows down. It leads to improper blood supply to the various organs of the body. It is like making your body a stagnant water pond. Because of shrinked blood vessels chances of blockages in arteries increases, which is not good for people with high cholesterol level.

2. Interference with Digestion:

Drinking chilled water leads to severe constipation. Cold water shrinks your large intestine causing various other complications related to the constipation and indigestion. Just think about it – if cold water can make your large intestine (which plays very important function of removing toxins and waste from your body) shrink, how it could be affecting your overall health?

3. Danger of organ failure:

When you drink chilled water it suddenly drops down the normal temperature of your stomach. At that temperature it’s very difficult for your stomach to digest the food. As a result stomach starts to raise the temperature of the water and bring it to the normal body temperature. To do this, stomach requires an excess amount of energy which comes from your blood. This causes blood from the other parts of the body to move towards the stomach, which causes shortage of blood supply to other organs. If this process continues like this multiple times everyday,  it might cause failure of those organs at some point in future.

4. Makes you Fat!

If you drink cold water with your food or immediately after eating food, the water’s cold temperature solidifies fats from the foods you have just eaten. The body in turn finds it hard to digest the unwanted fats from your food. Ultimately body stores that undigested fat in the various parts of our body.

5. Reduces your immunity:

Cold water interferes with the natural absorption of the nutrients inside the body, which ultimately makes body nutrient deficient and reduces our immunity. Our chances of getting sore throat and other viral infections increases.

Some people say that when you drink cold water it requires more energy to digest it and so it burns more calories. But it is very unnatural to force our digestive system to work hard.

We should always make things as easy as we can for our body then only it will function properly for longer period of the time.

Once you get into the habit of drinking water at room temperature or warm, you will notice a dramatic improvement in your digestion and the way your body feels while eating and after the meal.

So the next time someone offers you a glass of chilled water, just say NO!

P.S. If you can’t do without cold water, here’s something for you. Since childhood I have seen clay pots called Matka in my house to store drinking water. For generations, almost every household in India has clay pots or copper pots that have been used according to the weather/season. In hot weather, most people use clay pots and in cold weather copper pots. Clay pot keeps water naturally cooled at around 14 degrees Celsius depending on the weather, which is good for drinking – not too warm and not too cold and gives it refreshing flavor. These are the ancient methods based on the Vedic Science.

Drink Water one Sip at a time!

Our stomach is Acidic in nature because it has Hydrochloric acid in it which helps in the digestion of the food. Saliva in our mouth is Alkaline in nature and its job is to stabilize the acid in our stomach. When we gulp large amount of water at once very less saliva gets mixed with the water so the atmosphere inside the stomach remains acidic. This causes acidity, indigestion, bloating, gases, etc. and ultimately it causes weight gain and increase in the cholesterol levels, because stomach fails to absorb essential nutrients from the food that we eat and remove unwanted material out of the body. In short by drinking water in a wrong way, we are disturbing the natural process of the digestive system.

Change The Habit

When we drink water one sip at a time, more saliva gets mixed with the water which makes water alkaline and when it reaches the stomach – which is acidic in nature – it creates Neutral atmosphere inside the stomach which is an ideal state for our stomach which eases and aides the entire digestive process.

Have you ever noticed how birds and animals drink water? If not then observe the next time you get a chance and you will notice that they take one sip at a time and drink it. In this way every time their tongue gets wet their saliva mixes with the water. Nature is smarter than we think!

Studies in the early 20th century had also shown some evidence of the dietary effect of saliva, and now a recent study has confirmed on the medicinal properties of the saliva. Some researchers have found that a simple saliva test is capable of diagnosing diabetes and cancer at an early stage, and perhaps neurological disorders and autoimmune diseases too because saliva contains many of the same disease-revealing molecules that are contained in our blood!

So now, it’s a time to take our Saliva seriously because we often don’t realize how important something is, until its too late.

Let That Holy Liquid Flow Inside Your Body!

Now you must be wondering how exactly should I drink  water?

You probably already know that it is very important that you should drink enough water everyday, to keep your body hydrated and remove toxins out of your body. You should always drink water at room temperature or lukewarm water. Never drink cold water. (Why? I am going to write about that very soon. Maybe I already have, please check my other posts).

This is what you should do:

First, take one sip of water at a time in your mouth. Rinse and swish the water in your mouth (as if you are using mouthwash) and let the saliva in your mouth mix with the water, and then drink it. Repeat the process until you finish your glass of water and do this every time you drink water. Pretend like you are drinking hot tea or coffee and drink your water sip by sip. Remember that “Slow and Steady Wins the Race”. It will be difficult and even a bit frustrating (yes, it was for my husband) when you first start to do this. It took about a week for me to get used to this technique.

What transformation will you see within a month?

  1. Your waistline will be reduced by few inches.
  2. Bloating will be completely gone.
  3. Your digestion will be improved.
  4. No acidity.
  5. Your bowel movements will be smoother.
  6. You will feel lighter and more energetic.
  7. Overall fat deposition tendency of your body will reduce over time.
