Correct way to Drink Water from Copper Vessels and its Health Benefits

Correct way to Drink Water from Copper Vessels and its Health Benefits

For thousands of years, people of India and many other Asian countries have known the benefits of drinking water from Copper Vessels. Ancient Ayurvedic scriptures have stated many health benefits of storing water in copper vessels. Now, the current medical studies are also supporting this ancient Ayurvedic practice.

Copper has many antimicrobial properties. Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency registered copper as the only solid surface material to kill bacteria that may pose a threat to human health. Hospital-acquired infections (HAI) are becoming a major health crisis throughout the world. In the United States, 4.5% of hospitalized patients develop hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), resulting in an estimated 100,000 deaths

Many hospitals are taking steps to reduce such infections by equipping their patient rooms and operating rooms with copper alloy surfaces, replacing bed rails, tables, and door knobs. Such alterations have helped reduced the number of healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs) in patients by more than half (Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, May 2013).

What exactly happens when you store water in a copper vessel?

When water is stored in a copper vessel overnight or for over eight hours, a very small amount of copper ions gets dissolved into the water. This process is called Oligodynamic effect which has the ability to destroy a wide range of harmful microbes, molds, fungi etc.

What does Ayurveda say?

Ayurveda states that when you drink water stored in a copper vessel, it has the ability to balance all the three doshas in our body Vata, Pitta and Kapha and also has many health benefits (to know more about the 3 doshas and how they affect your personality and body, read my older post on this topic, click here )This happens because copper vessel positively charges the water. The therapeutic water from a copper vessel is called Tamra jal in Sanskrit.  The traces of copper in a Tamra jal are safe and in fact, healthy.

Health Benefits and Correct Way of drinking water stored in Copper Vessels

The right way to drink water from a copper vessel:

1. First, it is very important to buy vessels that are made of Pure Copper. Do not buy the ones that have other metals mixed in it. Some of the common vessels made with copper are copper water jugs or a Kalash. Nowadays Pure Copper Water Bottles, including some really Beautiful Hand Painted Copper Water Bottles and Moscow Mule Cups are also available online. Check out these links from Amazon. Just make sure it is of a good quality.

2.  Once you have bought it, rinse it out thoroughly with water. Then fill it with water and cover it. Let the water rest for 6 hours (minimum) to 8 hours (maximum) and then drink it.

3. You can follow this ancient Ayurvedic practice:

Keep water in a copper vessel overnight by your bedside and drink this water first thing in the morning when you wake up. This particular practice is very useful in stimulating your bowel movements in the morning. This practice will keep your digestive system very healthy and set your metabolism for rest of the day. You will feel very refreshed and light every day.

Benefits of drinking water stored in a copper vessel:

1. Prevents water-borne diseases

2. Helps the digestive system to perform well

3. Aids in weight loss

4. Slows down ageing

5. Good for heart health

6. Maintains haemoglobin level

7. Regulates the working of the thyroid glands

8. Stimulates the brain

9. Its anti-inflammatory

How much is too much?

– Drinking water from copper vessel has numerous health benefits but this does not mean that you can drink this water all day long.

– Drinking water stored in the copper vessel once in the early morning and then in the evening is more than enough to get the required amount of copper for our body.

– Remember you should not drink this copper vessel water all year long. Once you start drinking water stored in a copper vessel you can continue this practice for three months and then take a break for one month (stop drinking water stored in the copper vessel). After a one month break, you can continue drinking water again from a copper vessel for next three months. This gives our body time to remove any excess copper deposited in our body. The body has its own mechanism of eliminating the excess of anything.

Ayurvedic rules are very precise and if we follow them accordingly we will never get any side effects.

  1. This is very interesting information. Copper jugs and cups look very pretty, and now I know they have a good health purpose too.

  2. U mean.we shud not drink.for three months even.in early morning? Shd we need to clean the copper jug daily?

    1. Hello Sureka, thank you for your comment. Its not a three months break its 1 month break after every 3 months of drinking water from copper vessel. One should clean copper jug everyday like normal utensils. Special cleaning of copper jug with lemon and salt done once in a week is enough. 🙂

    1. Hello Nirmal, Thank you for your question. Our body needs copper in a very trace amount. Drinking copper water twice in a day is enough to get required amount of copper because some of the whole foods we eat also has copper in it. Drinking water from copper vessel throughout the day will not have immediate harmful effect on the body, but excess of copper deposition in the body leads to copper toxicity. To be safe it is better to follow ayurvedic rules which I have mentioned above.

    1. Hello Ashima, thanks for your question. Sometimes identifying copper can be as simple as examining its color. Real copper has a distinctive reddish tint, which may also be described as orange or pink. The oxidation on real copper (when exposed to water and oxygen) makes it darker in color and forms a crust in shades of green and blue. When you apply mixture of lemon juice and salt over it and rinse it with water, it will glow like reddish shiny Color again. This is a sign of pure copper. There are many other tests are available to identify pure copper which requires special instruments, But you can trust this traditional at home test and you can get good quality of copper vessel from trusted and reputed vendors. 🙂

  3. Love this one…Indian culture has many things which we can benefit from…I am yet to find a good copper vessel but your answer about how to find a pure copper is surely going to help me… Thank you for sharing this with us 😀

    1. Hello Divinehomemaker, Its good that you have copper pipes in your home, but When you store water in a copper vessel it gives time for copper ions to get dissolve into the water which the ability to destroy wide range of harmful microbes, molds, fungi etc.

  4. DEAR WRITER,

PLS NOTE THAT WE ARE A SYSTEM DEVELOPER AND ARE LOOKING TO DEVELOP THE WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEM WITH COPPER…AND HAVE GONE THROUGH YOUR ARTICLE AND SAME TURNS OUT TO BE VERY MUCH INFORMATIVE AND USEFUL..

NOW I HAVE FEW DOUBTS…IF YOU SHALL ADDRESS…

1] WANT TO MAKE SYSTEM ONLINE..INSTEAD OF BATCH PROCESS…IT IS POSSIBLE TO DERIVE THE SAME BENEFIT, IF WE MAKE SYSTEM ONLINE?? OR BATCH PROCESS IS COMPULSORY???

2] WHATS THE MAXIMUM CONTENT OF COPPER, WHICH IS ALLOWABLE FOR HUMAN INTAKE???

    PLS DO GUIDE.

    WITH REGARDS.

    TUSHAR SHAH
    INDIA

    1. Hello Tushar, thank you for your question. To get the most benefits out of copper vessel water, batch process is compulsory. It gives time for the copper ions to leach inside the water. According to Ayurveda water should be stored in a copper vessel overnight which is around 6 to 8 hours. The daily recommended amounts of copper for adults is 900 mcg. This research link might help you https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK222312/
You can develop the system with two compartments above and below, which can purify the water first and then it can also store it in a copper tank below. If you can add time indicator to your system which will indicate the completion of 6 hours, then it will be an innovative one. 🙂

  5. Dear Madhavi ji,
Your post is very informative. I have a doubt, if you pl clear, it’ll be helpful.

I’ve purchased a Dr. Copper water bottle and I want to keep it in my office (My office is filled with only plastic bottles). I’ll have to keep water stored in it for 16 hrs and 24hrs. On week off’s it’ll be around 48hrs. This question arised because you mentioned as max 8 hrs. Will it be harmful if I keep water stored in it for longer hours?
Again I’ll be consuming one litter of water spread out in 8 hrs shift rather than one morning and one evening dose as you suggest.

My shift changes every two days. So please suggest.
    🙂🙂🙏🙏

    1. Hello Brijesh, thank you for your question. It is good that you have decided to drink water from copper vessel instead of plastic bottles. According to research studies, storing water in copper vessel can leach some amount of copper inside water and it reaches around 180ppb in 16 hours. This can go up to 450ppb in 7 days. Which is well within the WHO limit of 2mg/L (2000ppb).The daily recommended amounts of copper for adults is 900 mcg. Drinking water stored in a copper vessel early in the morning has a good effect on your digestive system but you can also drink this water throughout the day. 1 to 2 liter of water stored in a copper vessel is enough per day no need to drink too much of it. Remember to give break of 1 month after every three month of drinking water stored in a copper vessel as mentioned in the blog.

  6. Simply great
Was trying to find the positive s and precautions of using copper vessel
Just loved the way u explained
    Thanks

  7. Hi Madhavi. Thanks a lot for the article. I store water in a big copper vessel and drink it all day long (around 4 litres) and throught the year. I clean it once in 2 weeks. Is taking a one-month break after every 3 months enough, with what I have been doing now?

    1. Yes, one month break is enough. According to research studies, storing water in a copper vessel can leach some amount of copper inside water and it reaches around 180ppb in 16 hours. This can go up to 450ppb in 7 days. Which is well within the WHO safe limit of 2mg/L (2000ppb).The daily recommended amounts of copper for adults is 900 mcg. So you are safe with one month break after every three months. 🙂

    1. Hello, yes you can make copper water slightly warm if you want. As per my knowledge heating will not affect the properties of the water stored in a copper vessel. One method of making copper water involves boiling of the water in a copper vessel until water in it reduced to half. This heating process releases copper ions in the water in less time.

  8. Leaving water in the copper cup / tumbler overnight leaves bottom of the cup darker colour and having some dark brown marks/spots. Is that expected ?

    1. Hello Sai, Yes dark color of copper vessel is expected when we store water in it. This happens when copper comes in contact with water and air (oxygen). This process is called oxidation. Nothing to worry about it.

  9. I store about 2 liters of filtered water after boiling it and immediately pouring it in a copper vessel whenever my water stock gets empty. I again refill it by boiling fresh water at any time of the day but ensure that it remains in copper vessel for at least 8 hours. I will give a break after 3 months. Hope I have understood your instructions correctly and following it. Now I don’t drink normal water from filter any time of the day. On average I am consuming 2 liters of copper treated water per day. Hope it’s okay!!

  10. Is their any issue if the vessel/water bottle is exposed to oxygen/air ….. have heard this is not correct way.

  11. Madhvi ji please reply to my submission as above mentioning whole day drinking of copper treated water is OK!?

    1. Hello Ashok ji, sorry for the late reply. Drinking water stored in a copper vessel early in the morning has a good effect on your digestive system but you can also drink this water throughout the day. 1 to 2 liter of water stored in a copper vessel is enough per day and you are in a limit. Just Remember to give break of 1 month after every three month of drinking water stored in a copper vessel as mentioned in the blog to be safe and get all the benefits. 🙂

  12. Madhvi so nice of you to clear all my doubts in one go! Enjoying the water early morning and through the day too!
As per advise I drink water after 90 minutes of consuming my food.
I am vibrating this water too!
Thanks a lot! May God bless you!

  13. Such a great information. That was our ancient technique drinking water in copper vessel used to healthy life from all day activity and we just following their technique.

  14. 15. Hi madhavi thanks for the great information. I have few questions
    1) can I use copper water bottle winter and summer means in all seasons?

    2) As u said we should not use copper water bottle more than twice per day but can I use without storing water after twice as a normal water bottle.

    Thanks in advance

  18. Hello
    Thanks for educating the community.

To support your statement “current medical studies” it is better to give a link that where you read or authentic document/research document so that visitor to your post would attract more and confidence in what you are saying.

    It is better to explain
How to wash when a new copper vessel was bought?
How to clean periodically (which you explained just wash)?
What are the ways to clean the copper vessel with your practical experience.

Thanks for your volunteer-ship in educating the community.

    1. Hi Kris,
I am glad you liked my post. I have already mentioned all the research documents at the end of the post under the ‘Sources’ section.
I have also written a blog on how to clean a copper vessel and the different ways to clean it. The links are towards the end of the post. Hope you like that too!

  19. Hello there, Thanks for the article. Somebody had mentioned to me few days ago that the water stored in the copper vessel should be a direct tap water. Was wondering if it was a direct tap water only or can we store filtered water as well. Because, I do not want to trust the tap water’s hygienity. Also the area in which I’m residing , the tap water is heavily salt deposited. So I would definitely want to purify it before drinking. What is your suggestion? TIA

  20. Hi Madhvi.,
Is it ok to store boiled water (hot) in copper jugs and bottle overnight and use it in the mornings…? Also can I give the same to my 7&4yr olds..?

    1. Hello Parul, Yes you can store boiled water in copper jugs and bottles there is no problem with that. The daily requirement of copper for young children is less so check that out. Make sure you are not giving an overdose of copper water to them. 1 glass of copper water a day will be enough for them. Also, follow the rules mentioned in the post. It is always good to consult with your doctor before making any dietary changes.

  21. Im thinking about buying a copper water dispenser, it stores 3.6 galons of water but I just read that I shouldn’t drink that water if it has over 8 hours in contact with copper, so a dispenser doesn’t sound now like a good idea. Can you refer me of a more complete study about this so I can fully understand
    Thanks in advance

    1. Hello, Ayesha thank you for your question. It is good that you have decided to drink water from a copper vessel. 1. Thank you so very much for your response. I will follow your recommendations. Also would like to know about the effect Copper can cause on already alkalinized water. I buy mine in a place where they sell it alkaline and was wondering if copper could affect negatively to that
        Thanks in advance

  22. Love your blog. You have mentioned such a great information about the copper vessels. It’s not about just how to drink water stored in copper vessels, but what are the benefits, how the copper effects our body are mandatory information everybody should know. And this is what I like in your blog Madhavi.

  23. Nice and informative post. Can you please help me with below questions:
1- My copper vessel has become dark and the water tastes bitter somedays and very pleasing some other days. Why is the variation?
2- I cover the copper vessel with a steel saucer which sometimes comes in contact with the water. Is that ok or should I make changes

  24. Hi , If I pour water from copper vessel to a plastic or ceramic bottle, will it be having same health benefits as drinking from copper vessel directly?

  25. Hi Madhavi,
In a break of one month, from drinking water from copper vessel, how should i drink water…i mean which vessel.
    Thank you.

  26. Hi Madhavi,

I just want to ask if I add jeera into water and keep it in copper vessel overnight and drink early morning empty stomach it is good or no

    1. Hello Rusbe, I would recommend not to put anything into your copper water. let the water stay in the copper vessel by itself for the ionization process (a process of alkalizing). Adding jeera or anything else in this water might hinder with its natural process of ionization. Soak your jeera into different container and you can mix it with copper water before drinking it.

    1. Hello Charu, You can use copper glass, copper bottle or copper jug to store and drink copper water. It’s up to you. It is recommended that one should drink at least 1 litre of water early in the morning. You can replace your normal water with this copper infused water in the morning and do the same in the evening. Drink normal filtered water for remaining hours of the day.

  27. Hi Madhavi, Great information. Thanks for posting.

I purchased copper vessel which can store up to 3lts of water. In the morning I see oily layer formed on the top layer of water in the vessel. Is it good to drink that oily formation or is there anything wrong with the copper vessel itself and not safe to drink the oily water?

Sometimes I even smell the water little different from normal water after storing in copper vessel, is this normal?

  28. Hi Madhavi,
Does the water kept in copper utensil for 8 hrs. Will lose it effect if kept in plastic bottle for more than a day before drinking?

  29. Hi,

Can we drink water which is stored in Copper vessel for 3 days?

I have seen lot of times a layer of metal over the water surface when i forgot upto 3 days to take water from copper vessel
